Ham Radio License Renewal: How to Renew With the FCC
You can renew a US ham radio license online through the FCC’s Universal Licensing System (ULS), then pay the application fee through CORES. Check your license’s expiration date first: it determines whether you can file now and which renewal rules apply. This guide walks through the online process, expired licenses, account problems, and alternative filing routes.
When to Renew Your Ham Radio License
US amateur radio licenses have a 10-year term. Look up your call sign using License Search on the FCC Universal Licensing System, and use the expiration date on that record to plan your renewal.
Do not rely solely on an old paper license, a reminder email, or the date you last took an exam.
Online renewal involves two systems:
- ULS: Where you manage your license, submit the renewal application, and check its status.
- CORES: The FCC’s Commission Registration System, where you manage account registration and complete payment.
Before starting, gather your call sign, account credentials, current mailing and email addresses, and a payment method. Publicly searching for your license does not sign you in to manage it.
How to Renew Your Ham Radio License Online
| Your License Situation | What to Do |
|---|---|
| Individual license still active | File in ULS starting 90 days before expiration. Earlier renewal applications are not eligible. |
| Individual license expired | ULS renewal remains available during the two-year filing grace period, but separate FCC operating-authority rules apply. |
| Filing grace period has ended | Ordinary renewal cannot be granted. Contact the FCC about your next licensing steps. |
| Club or military recreation station | Confirm the station’s radio service code and whether a Club Station Call Sign Administrator must handle the filing. |
Step 1: Sign In and Prepare Your Payment Account
- From the ULS homepage, choose Online Filing to open License Manager.
- Sign in with your FCC Registration Number (FRN) and password. Use the FRN associated with your license, not your call sign.
- Make sure you can also access the current CORES system. If you do not already have a CORES username account, create one and associate your existing FRN with it so you can pay the application fee.
If you have forgotten your credentials, recover access to the existing account rather than creating another FRN to work around the problem.
Step 2: Open the Renewal Application
- In My Licenses, select the call sign you want to renew.
- On the License At A Glance page, choose Work on this License > Renew.
An alternative route is My Licenses > Renew Licenses. Select the license, choose Add to place it in the Licenses to Renew list, and continue.
You only need to use one route. The renewal control appears when the license is eligible; its absence does not necessarily indicate a website error.
Step 3: Review Your Information and Submit
- Check the license and applicant information displayed in the application.
- Correct your mailing address and enter a current email address so the FCC can send your official electronic license after grant.
- Complete the required questions, select Continue to Certify, review the certifications, and submit as prompted.
- Save the submission confirmation and application file number.
Updating your contact information in CORES does not automatically update the contact information on your license. Make the necessary license-record changes in ULS.
Read the certification questions before submitting. A renewal application is still an application to the FCC, even when most of its information is already filled in.
Step 4: Pay the FCC Application Fee
Submitting the application is not the same as completing the renewal.
- After submitting, select Continue to CORES for Payment Completion when offered.
- Sign in to the CORES account associated with your FRN and locate the renewal application awaiting payment.
- Pay the $35 FCC renewal application fee.
- Save the payment confirmation with your application receipt.
The FCC requires payment within 10 calendar days of the application receipt date. Complete payment during the filing session if possible rather than treating the application confirmation as the final step.
Before leaving, make sure you have an actual payment confirmation, not just an application confirmation or a screen showing an amount due.
Step 5: Verify the Grant and Save Your License
- Return to ULS and check the application’s status. If it remains pending, monitor it and review any FCC correspondence.
- Once the renewal is granted, open the license record and verify the license details and contact information.
- Download the official authorization through ULS or the FCC’s license email. Save the PDF and print a copy if you want one.
Do not assume payment produces an immediate grant. The finished result is a granted renewal with an updated FCC license record, not merely a successful charge.
Expired Licenses and Other Renewal Situations
An On-Time Renewal Still Pending
Operating authority continues until the FCC’s final disposition when the FCC receives a renewal application on or before the license expiration date, under the FCC’s amateur license renewal rules.
That makes an on-time pending application different from an application first filed after expiration. The date the FCC receives the application matters, not simply whether the old expiration date has passed.
Filing on time does not remove the requirement to respond to an FCC request.
An Expired License Without a Timely Renewal
The two-year filing grace period provides a route to renewal after expiration. The FCC must receive the renewal application on or before that grace period ends.
For applications received after expiration, FCC guidance provides no amateur operator or station operating privileges unless and until the license is renewed. The grace period is therefore a filing opportunity, not an extension of operating authority.
An eligible individual license can still be renewed through ULS. Submit the application, complete payment, and verify the granted renewal in the FCC record.
After the grace period ends, the FCC cannot grant an ordinary renewal. Contact the FCC about the appropriate licensing route rather than trying to force an ineligible renewal through the system. For any case-specific question about operating authority, use official guidance rather than relying on a reminder notice or an assumed application status.
Club and Military Recreation Stations
For a club or military recreation station with Radio Service Code HA, the FCC directs renewal filings through a Club Station Call Sign Administrator. Confirm the exact radio service code on the station license before choosing a filing route.
Club vanity renewals may be filed in ULS with no changes. Do not assume that every club license follows the same process as an individual operator/primary station license.
Have the administrator confirm the filing and payment requirements for the station. Retain the filing acknowledgment, complete any required payment, and verify the granted renewal and official authorization in ULS.
ARRL VEC Manual Filing
ARRL VEC’s manual renewal service uses NCVEC Form 605. Confirm the current filing instructions and accepted submission method before sending personal information.
To complete a manual renewal:
- Complete and sign the required NCVEC Form 605.
- Send it to ARRL VEC using an accepted method and its current submission details.
- After the application is filed, FCC Common Filing Tasks directs you to continue to CORES for payment completion.
- Pay the $35 FCC fee within 10 days of the FCC application receipt date.
- Save the payment confirmation, check ULS for the grant, and download the renewed license.
Any service charge or membership benefit is separate from the FCC application fee. Sending a form to an intermediary is not, by itself, confirmation that the FCC has received and granted the renewal.
Fix Common ULS and Payment Problems
Start by identifying whether the problem concerns account access, filing eligibility, payment, or processing. Repeatedly submitting applications is not a good substitute for checking the existing filing.
| Problem | Likely Issue | Next Action |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot sign in to License Manager | Password or account-access problem | Confirm the FRN on your public license record and use the FCC’s password-reset or account-support options. |
| You signed in, but your call sign is missing | You may be using a different FRN | Compare the signed-in FRN with the one associated with the license before creating another account or application. |
| There is no Renew link | The license may be outside the filing window | Check eligibility: the control is available from 90 days before expiration through two years afterward. |
| CORES does not show the expected application | Account association or filing status needs checking | Confirm that the CORES account is associated with the FRN used for the application, then check the application record. |
| You have a receipt, but the expiration date has not changed | The application may still be pending, or payment may be incomplete | Check both application status and payment status, and review FCC correspondence. |
If the FCC system is unavailable, check its notices and return when service resumes. A browser error or unfinished session is not proof of submission; look for an application confirmation.
For unresolved problems, contact FCC support with the call sign, FRN, application file number, and any payment confirmation. Those details help distinguish an account issue from a filing or payment issue. Do not include your password in a support message.
Keep Your Renewal Records and Set Reminders
Once the renewal is granted, keep the records together so the next renewal does not begin with an account-recovery problem:
- Save the official license PDF alongside the application confirmation.
- Record the expiration date shown on the renewed license, rather than estimating it from the day you paid.
- Set a calendar reminder 90 days before expiration, plus a follow-up reminder before the expiration date.
- Keep account recovery information accessible, preferably in a password manager.
- Maintain current license contact information when your mailing or email address changes.
A renewal offer from a private company is optional. You do not have to use that company’s service to renew through the FCC, and receiving a reminder does not mean an application has been filed for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Renew My Ham Radio License for Free?
No. The FCC renewal application fee is $35, including when you file directly through ULS. Direct filing avoids an optional third-party service charge; it does not eliminate the FCC fee.
How Many Years Is a Ham Radio License Good For?
A US amateur radio license has a 10-year term. Use the expiration date shown in the FCC license record to determine when renewal is due, including after a renewal has been granted.
What Form Do I Use for Ham Radio License Renewal?
FCC Form 605 is the amateur licensing application form; ULS collects the application information electronically, so an online renewal does not require you to print and mail a form. NCVEC Form 605 is a different form used by ARRL VEC for manual renewals.
